A Better Solution for Cataracts
Everyone grows old. This is an unfortunate but uniform fact of our lives as human beings. We get older and our bodies break down piece by piece. Some are faster than others, and some only suffer the worst while others can live with only minimal interruption.
But if there is one that we all run the risk of it is cataracts. Every single one of us runs the risk of obtaining one and having our lives affected by it. Fortunately, there are things we can do about them and ways of getting back the vision comparable to that of our youths, so don’t fret! Solutions are out there. What is a Cataract?
A cataract is the opacification, or clouding of the lens inside our eyes. This clouding causes a blockage or distortion in the amount of light that can enter our eyes, leading to a lack of distinction between colors or tints, dimming of light or all-out blindness if left unchecked.
The most common cause of a cataract is simply time, they tend to develop as we age as the proteins in our eyes degrade on a daily basis, a process that can be accelerated by external influences such as ultraviolet light (or bright sunlight) or toxins found in the air. Medical conditions such as diabetes and hypertension have also been found to aid the degradation of these proteins and links between smoking and drug use have also been found. How are they dealt with?
Despite many years of research, no real treatment has been found to prevent the formation of cataracts beyond simple protection from the elements and the avoidance of cigarettes or drugs. There are no known medications or substances like eye drops that have been made to prevent or reverse the effects, however, there is a solution.
Cataract removal surgery is the only known treatment and years of experimentation and activity within this field have yielded greater and greater means of performing it. In the old days, you would have to undergo a manual operation in which a surgeon would physically cut out the cataract and replace it with an artificial intra-optical lens. There has been advancement in technology that is set to change the face of cataract surgery.A Superior Method is Upon Us
Nevada Eye Physicians are one of a few eye hospitals that are pioneering a new form of laser surgery known as LENSAR. LENSAR is exemplary in the field of eye surgery because it uses a new system of Augmented Reality to create 3D images of the patient’s eye that allows the surgeon to create a specially optimized algorithm based upon their individual biological construction. Aided by precise mechanical aiming, the LENSAR System is quicker than any standard cataract surgery, allowing the surgeon to plan and enact it within the same sitting, and much more precise than any manual procedure.
