Is LASIK Right For You?
This year marks the 25th anniversary of the LASIK procedure. When LASIK was first performed, it was a revolutionary technique in eye surgery and has only gotten better since. Our technology has come a long way since the beginning. The first LASIK procedure used a metal blade to create a micro-thin incision in the cornea. Now we have the advanced femtosecond lasers which are far superior and accurate within millionths of a meter. We also have wavefront-optimized treatments which provide better quality vision than ever before.
I personally had LASIK surgery over 10 years ago and still enjoy perfect 20/20 vision as a result. I am excited to bring this new technology to my patients. There are many advantages to having laser vision correction. For those who have active lifestyles, you don’t have to worry about your glasses fogging up or your contact lenses falling out. While very safe when used correctly, contact lenses can potentially cause chronic irritation or infections when worn for an excessive period of time. These complications can be avoided with LASIK surgery. Patients with high amounts of correction can see some distortion from thick glasses or not be corrected fully with current contact lens technology. This can be resolved with LASIK surgery, and better quality vision can be achieved. Not to mention that LASIK is a one-time cost that will have lasting benefits for many years, while glasses and contact lenses require updating on a yearly basis and will likely cost more in the long run.
See how much you could save by using the LASIK affordability calculator at the Refractive Surgery Alliance website below http://www.refractivealliance.com/lasik-affordability-calculator/ Two recent studies completed in 2014 looked at multiple aspects of patient satisfaction with regards to their LASIK procedure. In general the results showed exceptional results following LASIK surgery. Patients reported less visual symptoms (ghosting, halos, glare, and starbursts) 6 months following surgery compared to before surgery. When asked “How satisfied are you with present vision?” 97% were satisfied at 6 months after surgery. This is a significant improvement, since 73% were dissatisfied with their vision before surgery. 99% of patients were able to see 20/20 in both eyes without glasses or contact lenses.
While not everyone is a candidate for LASIK surgery, there are other technologies we have available that will allow us to work to get you free from dependence on your glasses or contact lenses. We would be happy to see you for a free LASIK consultation at our offices so that we can discuss your options for better vision. Please call our office at 702-456-4000 and let us help you see better.
