When Should You Schedule An Eye Exam?

It is very important for adults 40 and older to have eye exams every year to check for problems. Regular eye exams are critical for finding:

  • Glaucoma
  • Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD)
  • Cataracts
  • Diabetic Retinopathy

This is very important, especially if you have risk factors or a family history of eye problems. For adults younger than 40 without any problems, recommendations vary from routine tests every two years to no tests. If you have a health concern such as diabetes or high blood pressure, work in a visually demanding job or take medications that can effect eyesight, you may need more frequent exams. Talk to your doctor to see what they recommend for you. Children without risk factors for eye problems need their vision checked around six months old, three years old, and before first grade. These exams should be done during doctor visits and with preschool eye screening. School-age children should get tested every 1-2 years.
