About Dry Eye

Dry eye syndrome is a very common eye condition that affects over 10 million Americans. It occurs when there is not enough tear production to properly lubricate and nourish the eye. Tears are a necessity for the overall health of the eye and for providing clear vision. When the eye does not produce tears, it can be extremely uncomfortable and cause the sufferer to have blurry vision. At Nevada Eye Physicians, our trained eye care professionals provide eye examinations to diagnose and treat dry eye syndrome in order to diminish symptoms and decrease discomfort. To learn more about dry eye syndrome treatment, contact one of our nine Nevada locations to schedule a consultation with one our experience physicians today.

Dry Eye Exam

Dry eyes are a result of a person’s inability to make enough natural tears on their own. Besides general discomfort, those who suffer from dry eye syndrome can experience:

  • Itchy eyes
  • Red eyes
  • Blurred vision
  • Lack of tear production
  • Overall eye dryness, lack of blinking
  • Scratchiness
  • Stinging or burning eyes
  • Stringy mucus around the eyes
  • Excess tearing
  • Difficulty wearing contact lenses
  • Eye irritation from smoke or wind

During the initial examination, one of our physicians will evaluate the patient’s eyes and tears to determine factors such as:

  • The volume of tears produced
  • The quality of the tears
  • How quickly tears can be made naturally
  • How long it takes tears to dry

During the examination, visible tears should be seen spreading evenly across the surface of the cornea with each blink of the eyelids. This should lead to proper lubrication of the front of the eye, which helps reduce infection and keep the eyes clean by washing away foreign matters. Patients with dry eyes will show a lack of tears, areas of dryness on the cornea, redness, irritation, and drainage that is not in balance.

Treatment

Dry eye syndrome has no cure, but its symptoms can be treated. Over-the-counter artificial tears that lubricate the eye are often the first choice depending on the severity. Thick gels and ointments are sometimes used at night to help lubricate the eye during sleep and treat the irritation. During your appointment, one of our eye care physicians will create a treatment plan that best fits your needs to help dramatically reduce your symptoms.

There are also things patients can do at home using self-care protocols to help reduce dry eye discomfort and overall symptoms. At-home dry eye remedies include:

  • Remembering to blink regularly
  • Wearing sunglasses outdoors, especially ones that expand outward to help prevent wind from reaching the eyes
  • Increasing the humidity at home and work
  • Nutritional supplements that contain essential fatty acids
  • Drinking plenty of water throughout the day
