Photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) was the first initial form of laser vision correction surgery. It is used to correct nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism by removing the thin outer layer of the cornea to reshape the underlying corneal tissue. PRK is also used for secondary vision correction procedures if the cornea has become too thin for other forms of laser correction surgeries. Results of a PRK procedure are very similar to LASIK vision correction surgeries though the recovery process may vary. Best Candidates
Prior to recommending a PRK procedure, your Nevada Eye Physicians surgeon will conduct a thorough eye exam to evaluate several characteristics including:
- Your pupil size
- The amount of moisture your eye produces
- The curvature of your cornea through corneal mapping
- The thickness of your cornea
Your general health and medical history will also be evaluated to determine if you are an ideal candidate for PRK.
Treatment Technique
Before the PRK procedure, your surgeon will use anesthetic drops to numb your eyes, then gently place an eyelid holder to prevent blinking. The surgeon will gently remove the thin layer of the surface of the cornea and use an excimer laser to reshape your cornea to the perfect form. Afterward, a protective bandage contact lens is placed on each eye to provide added comfort as your epithelium grows back and your eye begins to heal. This entire procedure will take place within a matter of minutes, as our team will follow a carefully planned outline determined during your preliminary visits.
What to Expect
A temporary contact lens will minimize discomfort and act as protection for the eyes following the procedure. You may suffer moderate discomfort for 3 – 4 days and light sensitivity may continue for 4 – 6 weeks. You can expect to resume driving and working around 4 – 5 days after surgery, though it is not uncommon for those with astigmatism or farsightedness to need more time to recover. Most patients report full recovery and optimum results after 1 – 3 months, with vision improvement continuing up to the six month post surgery mark. After PRK, you will not need glasses or contacts for most of your daily activities, but your vision can change over time. This is due to normal age progression and not the failure of the procedure.
