Keep Your Eye on the Sun
A bright sunny day is a beautiful thing to behold. But there is a dark side to the sun and it resides in the damaging effects of UV radiation to our eyes. The summer time is when most people are out enjoying the sun, but UV rays can cause damage to the eyes anytime of the year especially if you are around reflecting surfaces like water or snow. While intensive short-term exposure doesn’t have a lasting negative impact on eye health, long term exposure does. That’s why it’s important to make an appointment for a yearly eye exam with the best eye doctors around, at Nevada Eye and Ear in Henderson.
A heavy dose of sunshine on unprotected eyes over the course of the day can make your eyes feel gritty, irritated, and painfully sensitive to light. Simply put, it’s like “sunburn of the eyes”. The clinical name for that condition is called photokeratitis. Most research has shown the long term effect of regular exposure of your eyes to UV rays leads to a greater risk of cataracts, macular degeneration, and damage to the retina. There is even a condition known as “surfer; eye”, where the thin membrane that covers the eye is damaged from UV rays and glare off of reflective surfaces like water. The most important thing that you can do to protect your eyes from UV rays is to use proper eye wear. Nevada Eye and Ear has a great July special on a superb selection of lenses and frames that includes exactly what you need for sun protection. The lenses meet the recommended standards that includes: 1. Blocks out at least 99% of all UV radiation 2. Screens out 75 to 90 percent of visible light; 3. Be perfectly matched in color and free of distortion and imperfection 4. Have lenses that are gray for proper color recognition. There are other factors that increase the damaging effects of UV rays including the altitude of the environment that you in, and the geographic area. People that have spent a number of years in Sunbelt states in our country, or any area that is close to the equator should consider themselves to be at a higher risk of eye problems associated to sun exposure.
